One Paragraph Film Reviews: May 2015

Hey lovelies,

I thought i'd try something a bit different today and share with you my thoughts on some of the films that i've watched this month!

Some are new releases in the cinema, some are films i've simply never seen before, and some might even be old favourites.

I decided to stick to one paragraph reviews, that way I have to be precise in what I say, and there's no room for any spoilers in case you haven't seen them yet! :)

1. Far From The Madding Crowd

Having read the novel by Tom Hardy during my GCSE English lessons, I was actually quite excited to see this film. Granted it's been 7 years since I finished my GCSE's (and that's a very scary thought) so I didn't remember the story very well, but as soon as it started it all came back. It isn't a very action filled or particularly exciting film, it didn't bring out any strong emotions, I wasn't laughing hard or brought to tears with sadness, but it was just a nice film. Think the sort of film you'd want to watch on a Sunday afternoon. The story centers around Bathsheba Everdene, an independent woman who doesn't believe she should accept a marriage proposal simply because of advantage or circumstance, and it follows her story as she meets three different men, all who offer her different reasons for marriage. If you love period dramas i'd recommend it wholeheartedly, but if you want something action filled and exciting, it probably isn't for you.

2. Spooks

I really enjoyed this film. I did however, find it a little difficult to follow at times. Spooks: The Greater Good follows on from the British TV show Spooks (also known as MI:5 in some countries) which is a fictional show about MI5 officers working in London and it had ten seasons. The film doesn't explain the relationships between people, or any of their back stories in any detail, so after not watching the ten seasons before, I was a little confused at times! But mostly I really enjoyed it, it was full of action and a few unexpected turns keeping you guessing who is responsible for all of the bad things happening and wondering which characters you can trust. If you love action or films about spies and the secret services I would definitely recommend it, though i'd say it definitely helps you to understand it if you've seen the TV show first!

3. The Age of Adaline

I was a little disappointed with this film to be honest. I still enjoyed it, and i'd probably watch it again in the future but it wasn't what I was expecting. The story focuses on Adaline Bowman, a woman who hasn't aged a day in almost 80 years. Keeping her secret, she obviously had to live quite a sad life, having to leave people she loved so that they didn't find out. I thought leaving people she was in love with, and wanted to spend her life with would be heartbreaking to watch, but it was almost skimmed over, and you never really saw Adaline getting overly upset about the situation, obviously she wasn't happy about it, but I felt the emotions could have been stronger. It didn't stop me crying a couple of times, but I think it was more of me imagining how hard it would be, rather than seeing true heartbreak in front of me. A good film, but I think if you like to watch nicholas spark-esque films, you might find it lacking. Blake Lively was brilliant in it though, and i'd watch it again just for that.

4. Pitch Perfect 2

I was really looking forward to this one, and I really enjoyed it. I think with any sequel, the second film often lacks that special something that the first film had. As a stand alone film, it was really good, and I would love to see it again but when comparing it to the first one, I think I prefer the first film. I loved the cameo by Flula in this film though, he was really good and really funny, I also loved the cameo by Pentatonix, I just wish they had been in it longer! After the flashing incident seen in the trailer, the bellas get disqualified and have to fight to get their place back and out-perform the other groups. The songs are still good, though I think they were better in the original, and I felt like the film ended really fast, without much really happening, it could have easily lasted quite a lot longer. But overall, I really enjoyed it, and if you loved the first it's definitely worth watching.

5. A Royal Night Out

I think this has to be my favourite film that I saw in the cinema this month. Although some of the main characters are completely fabricated for the sake of the film, it is based on true events when princess Elizabeth and princess Margaret went into London for V.E. day. I loved seeing the spirit of the princesses and how they just wanted to go out and celebrate with everyone and get to know how people really felt. I really loved the film and it made me want to look up different members of the royal family when I got home to see how much of it was true. An odd thing about the film was that it gave me a new found respect for many of the royals, even if they dreamed of doing something other than the role they were born into, they understand it is their duty and do the job the best they can, something to admire really! It made me laugh so many times, so if you want a fun uplifting film, I definitely recommend that you see this one!

6. Into The Woods

I absolutely loved this film. I've always been a fan of musicals and I love when people take fairytales back to their original dark versions or put twists on stories that are usually happy ever afters. The songs and the general feel to the whole film is very similar to Sweeney Todd. The film is full of big names, and some lesser well known actors but every single person in this film has an incredible voice, I was in awe a few times and would absolutely love to see this on the stage. The fairy tales and stories in this film are not happily ever afters, and in a way shows the greed and selfishness of many of the things wished for in fairytales. The songs have so many layers and build up to be huge dramatic numbers, and I just want to watch it again and again. If you love musicals, and dark films like Sweeney Todd i'd definitely recommend it (though it isn't quite as dark as that). One last thing to point out however is that the whole film is physically dark too, so I wouldn't recommend watching it in the daylight as you probably won't be able to see most of it!

What films have you been loving this month, any you'd recommend?

Let me know if you've seen any of these and what you thought of them!

A Mini Mid May Favourites

Hello Lovelies,

Lately my monthly favourites have turned more into mid-month favourites, so here's some of the things i've been loving lately!

Naked Smoothies

I love these things, they taste soo good. It's become a little bit of obsession, which is probably not great as they have crazy amounts of natural sugar in (I was shocked how much sugar is in fruit haha) but they do have loads of vitamins in and it may be psychological, but I do feel so much more awake and just better when i've had one!

I would make my own smoothies, but I really hate the texture when there are seeds and skin in it, and these are really smooth, almost like a thick juice so i'd rather just drink these!

Personalised Stationery

These notebooks and mug are from GettingPersonal.co.uk and I love them so much. They were sent to me as a gift a week or so ago, and i've been using them everyday. The mug has gone to the office so I can have my hot drinks in it during the day, and the notebooks are full of blog and uni notes.

I wanted to get some notebooks specifically for blog notes but I didn't know where to get them from so I was so happy when these arrived! They are really good quality too, so if you're looking for some I definitely recommend having a look on their website! :)

Wantfeed

I've had a Wantfeed account for a while now, but it's only within the last few days that i'm starting to become a little addicted to just scrolling through the homepage.

It's sort of like a pinterest shopping list. It's the same endless scrolling you get sucked into on pinterest but you can add them to a list for people to just buy from, which is amazing, especially with my birthday coming up next month *hint hint mum and dad* (only joking, maybe).

Sorry it's only a quick post today, so much to do!

What have been your favourite things so far this month?

Hope you've all had a good weekend!

Love, Amylou x

Spring Event Dresses

Hey lovelies!

Spring is such a lovely time, and it's often a favourite for many special events such as weddings and christenings, so I thought i'd put together a few of my favourite spring-inspired pastel dresses that i'd love to wear to any spring event!

Spring dresses

All of the dresses were available at the time of posting

I love so many of these dresses that I actually bought a few, though I think my absolute favourite is the blue lace dress from Coast in the top right-hand corner, if only I had an event to wear it to, I would buy it!

I know some people wear pastels year round, but I tend to go towards darker colours for autumn and winter, so it's so lovely to be able to get out all of my pastels in the Spring.

I'd love to know which is your favourite!

Hope you are all enjoying the bank holiday weekend!

Bonprix Blogger Style Challenge

Hey lovelies!

The lovely PR team over at Bonprix contacted me recently and asked me to take part in their monthly blogger style challenge*. After picking my favourite dress from their website, I had to put together three different holiday looks and see what I could come up with!

I'd love to know which of the looks i've put together is your favourite!

Look 1

For my first look I decided to dress up the Empire Line Maxi Dress* with my favorite black Aldo heels, black New Look bag and my fitbit bracelet. This outfit would be perfect for an evening dinner on holiday. The light layers of the bottom part of this dress mean it keeps you cool whilst also being a floor length dress. I kept accessories minimal keeping the focus on the dress. Definitely one of my favourite looks, and one i'll be sporting in Italy this summer.

Look 2

For my second outfit, I decided to put together a look for sightseeing. I'll be going to Italy this summer and that means lots of sightseeing, but I didn't want to wear the usual shorts and tee that I usually go for. I paired the dress* with my favourite Michael Kors sunglasses, Marks and Spencers hat, Ralph Lauren bag, fitbit bracelet and Next shoes. I also felt like the full length skirt would be a little much for day time exploring, but luckily the skirt is sectioned and so I simply took the front section and wrapped it around my waist into a belt.

Look 3

The sun decided to disappear at this point in true British spring style, so the colours look a little different in this one! I decided for my third look that I wanted another evening look, but this time I wanted one that was a little more casual. I've tied up the front of the dress again and added some nude New Look heels, a Michael Kors watch, Pandora bracelet and Accessorize Bag. This would be perfect for going for an early dinner/late lunch. It is a smart look without being too formal, and would be perfect if the sun is still warm but you want to look a little dressy.

I had so much fun putting these looks together and I would like to say a huge thank you to the PR team at bonprix for inviting me to take part and sending me a beautiful dress. If you want to see the dress online or any of their other styles you can click here :)

Which of these looks are your favourite? Would you style the dress another way?

All my love, Amylou x

*disclaimer - this dress was sent to me by Bonprix for the purpose of this post, but all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own*

Life Goals / Bucket List

Hey lovelies!

So I've been having a think about all of the things that I would love to do one day, and what better way to remember them than to make a little bucket list and put it on my blog so I can remember all of the things that I want to do.

Maybe i'll write one every year and see how what I want to do changes, I think that could be pretty interesting to see! Most of them will end up being things that i'll never be able to do, just things I dream of being able to do one day. But too high aspirations are better than too low ones I guess!

So here goes!

1. Visit every state in the USA

As you can see i'm quite a way off this one still! I've only been to New York, Massachusetts, Florida, Nevada and California, but I hope to visit the rest soon!

2. Open my own store

So many ideas for what I would love this to be, but it's something i'm still working on.

3. Live in the USA for a year

I don't know if i'd move over there forever, I think once I started a family i'd want to be closer to my family and live in the UK, but who knows!

4. Live by the sea

There's something just so calming about waking up or even going to sleep and hearing the waves crashing. Though I imagine this is something i'd tie in with living in the states, as it tends to just rain and be stormy on the British coast so you can't really appreciate it!

5. Learn another language

I've always wanted to be able to speak French or Italian. I got an A in my GCSE french but I didn't keep it up, and now I probably couldn't even order a sandwich. Hopefully it's something i'll get back into when I finish university later this year.

6. Have a house with a library room

source

I've always loved reading. I've written a separate post about all that, so I won't go into it again, but having a room with walls full of books is something I would absolutely love.

And it is something that I need to make happen one day.

7. Roadtrip across the USA

So many of my goals involve going over the states haha! I've read somewhere that there is a route you can take, over 3-6 months and you can visit every landmark in every state.

Unfortunately I can't take 6 months off to drive around the US, nevermind find someone able to come along too! I would absolutely love to do it one day though.

8. Get back involved with performing arts

When I was younger I spent years in theatre groups performing plays both musicals and non-musicals and I loved it. Something i'm not quick to admit is that sometimes I actually really miss it, i'm just too shy to get involved again.

I think if I did it, i'd want to get involved in the musical side of things, so i'd definitely need to brush up on my singing skills! There's something that just makes me so happy when i'm doing that sort of thing, even if it's just singing and over-acting musical numbers when i'm cooking or in the house on my own! The way you have to really get into it, especially the disney-style ones.

Maybe one day.

I think i'll leave it there for now!

If I think of some more I might come back and update this, and I'll make another next year and see if i've achieved any, or see if I have any new ones!

What would love to do one day, any of the things i've mentioned?

Inspired Outfits: Everyday Cinderella

Hey lovelies!

There seems to be a theme to a lot of my recent posts after watching Cinderella! But i've always loved these sorts of posts when i've seen them, and i've been looking for some new spring outfits so I thought i'd share with you my favourite pieces that i've found for an everyday outfit inspired by Cinderella's blue dresses

Everyday Cinderella

I couldn't decide whether i'd want heels or flats, but how amazing are those jimmy choo heels?! I actually love them.

I love rings at the minute too. I have a little white gold bow one, but it's too big and just falls off me now, and I also have an adorable snowflake one but I feel like that is a bit wintery, so i'm on the lookout for some new ones and these two from Pandora are so cute! The top one is a ring of daisies and the bottom is two branches, I love them both!

The dress is beautiful. I love blue dresses and this one is in such a flattering shape, so nice! Plus it would look so nice with the cropped jacket and embellished headband.

One thing that I really love but don't own any of are the box clutches that look like books or magazines. I am in love with the old style ones and this cinderella one is so cute, I definitely want to get some of these!

What do you think to my picks for an everyday outfit inspired by cinderella? Would you pick something different? Let me know what you think!

Current Life Favourites

Hey lovelies,

There are so many things i've been loving recently, it's way too late for a march favourites post so I thought i'd just share my current favourites! They are quite random favourites so i've called this post a lifestyle favourites as there isn't really a theme to them, just things i've been enjoying!

Favourite TV show: Once Upon A Time

Once Upon A Time

I am so obsessed with this show. Season 4 is currently on and it's so good. Without ruining the story, if you haven't seen it (though most people have it seems!) it's about an evil queen who wants to ruin the happy ending of snow white and so sends all the fairytale characters to our world where they have no magic and don't remember who they are.

The fairytales are different to the ones we know, but I think it makes them better, the female characters are a lot stronger and more independent in this program too than in their disney stories. There are a few more sinister characters, and once or twice i've had to watch something afterwards before going to bed! But I think that's what makes me love it all the more, it's different and it makes the fairytales you loved as a kid all the more exciting.

One thing it is excellent for is making you think about evil. It reiterates the point that evil is made not born, and shows that most evil arises from envy, which is a very real point to be made. It also shows that everyone has both good and bad in them, and it's up to the individual to make their own choices and deal with the consequences.

The final thing that stands out to me is that they continue to say that 'all magic comes with a price'. I think that's a message that's very true. Not in the sense of actual magic, but in that if you take a short cut to get something, or do something you shouldn't, there will be a price (consequences) and that you should really think about whether it would be worth it.

Favourite Film: Cinderella

source

I only watched this film yesterday but I absolutely loved it. I'm a huge fan of the live action remakes that disney are doing at the moment. I think I was more impressed by Maleficent when it was first released, but Cinderella is definitely worth watching. The costumes are really good, they are still heavily influenced by the drawings in the original film, but they also have a modern twist on them to make them more relatable.

Everyone knows the story of cinderella and this is a really heartwarming version, it doesn't take much but I was almost crying at the sad parts of the film (no spoilers as to when) but it isn't so sad that it would upset children watching. The only downside to the remakes is that they don't include any of the songs that made the originals such magical films. If they had kept at least one or two of the songs in, I would have loved this film even more.

Favourite Album: PTX Volume 2

PTX Vol 2
source

I am absolutely loving Pentatonix at the moment, and this is my favourite album of theirs. Their cover of the Daft Punk songs is so good it's one of my top played songs ever. They are an acapella group, and if you didn't know you'd think they were just a normal group, the beats and rhythms that they make sound incredible. I'm actually in awe of their talent every time I watch any of their videos or listen to any songs. They also have a few originals on each album and Love Again which is on this album is my absolute favourite. It's also the video that includes the blue sparkly make up I showed you in a blog post recently. So good.

Favourite Clothing: Pink Joni Jeans - Topshop

These. Jeans. Are. Amazing. Seriously. You probably saw them on my last post and they are the comfiest things in the whole world, plus they are such a cute spring colour. I've been wearing them so much recently, they go with so many different tops and blazers and as they are cropped they look great with heels and flats. I don't know if they are meant to be crops or they just don't sell them long enough for me, but either way, they look great (if I do say so myself).

The Joni jean is a huge favourite of mine, I have them in a leather look black denim and I'm thinking of getting them in Duck Egg Blue too, which is my absolute favourite colour in the whole world. They are a stretchy denim fabric, but not as stretchy as jeggings, and definitely not as see through.

Favourite Drink: Pink Lemonade

Pink Lemonade
source

My love affair with pink lemonades began in a wine bar in Lancaster called Oscar's. They are made from vodka, cointreau, southern comfort, cranberry juice, lime cordial and lemonade. Or at least the ones I drink are, and they are so amazing. Really refreshing and fruity, a perfect spring drink, plus throw in a few slices of lemon and add a little umbrella and is there really any better pink cocktail? I think not.

What do you think of my favourites? What are you loving at the moment?
