Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015

Hey guys!

It's been a while! I failed miserably at blogmas didn't I! Once i'd missed a day I couldn't get back into it and so just spent the time away from my blog, but i've missed it!

I decided to start writing again with a little round-up of the last year, and looking forward to next year. It's going to be a bit personal, so if you're going to comment please keep it nice! I just wanted to document how far i've come this year, and even if it's not a big deal to some of you, it is to me :) It's also going to be pretty long!

2014 was both the worst and best year of my life so far, both at the same time.

I won't say I regret the choices I made this year, because you shouldn't regret things that once made you happy, but I will say I should have thought a lot harder about my decisions.

I don't want to dwell on the past so i'll make the bad parts a short one! haha

This year I was taken for granted, cheated on, forced out of my beautiful house near my uni in the lakes and had to move 100 miles away, I was messed around, had my heart broken a few times and was dumped by my boyfriend of almost 4 years who i'd pretty much centered my life around (stupid I know).

At the time, I didn't take it well, though to be honest by the end I had no tears left and cried less after we were done than when we were still together. Which was a huge wake up call! Though it was after we'd broken up that I found out he'd been cheating on me with a work colleague. For 6 months. Even though we lived together.

That I took even less well, it made me sick to my stomach, I never wanted to get out of bed and I pretty much didn't eat for about 2 months, I made myself really ill and lost 2 and a half stone (16kg). But then I bucked up my ideas and realised what a bullet i'd dodged.

I realised I was worth more than that, and this is where the good parts of 2014 start!

I gained so much more confidence this year. Confidence in myself. I started the year always wondering what other people were thinking of me, how could I give the best impression, but this year i've realised, all that matters is that i'm happy (and not doing anything bad to other people obviously).

If I want to experiment with dark lipsticks, or bright reds, why not? If I want to dye my hair blonde and then red a few weeks later, go for it. It doesn't matter if it suits me, or if someone else doesn't like it, it's what makes me happy and that's what counts.

I haven't felt so confident or free to do what I want in such a long time. I love it.

I've learnt to be more resilient too this year, and be more flexible with change. I had to move 100 miles away from my university, and I decided to change the entire topic of my masters when I was already half way through so I wouldn't get annoyed writing it every day, and it's been absolutely fine! I was incredibly stressed about the travelling, but i've gotten used to staying in guest rooms and hotels and with friends now!

I've also made quite a few new friends this year, friends that I hope to be close to for years to come, both at uni and at home. Friends that inspire me in so many different ways, in their desire to learn things, travel to new places and just make the world a happier place. And i'm thankful to meet every one of them.

And of course i've had some of the best memories this year with Lauren and Jo. I didn't see them as much this year as Jo lives in London, Lauren in Lancaster and me in Yorkshire, but when we did I had the best time. Especially winter wonderland which I hope becomes a tradition. I can't even pinpoint a specific moment from that weekend, but I just remember thinking how happy I was with them both, and how I wanted to feel like that as much as possible.

I also travelled to Mexico this year, and it was so beautiful! The sand was so white and the water so clear I was in awe. Unfortunately I discovered I don't actually like mexican food and pretty much lived off nutella crepes for 2 weeks, but it was still amazing. So many cocktails, so many pool games, such a good family holiday!

And of course a huge thing is that I started this blog in 2014! My first post I believe was about my new years resolutions, most of which I probably failed at. I've loved writing this blog, i've gotten to interact with so many other bloggers, been invited to events and openings and i've loved every second.

I'm also only a couple of views away from 10,000 which I think is just crazy. For some that might not seem like a lot, but to me it's amazing. Last month I had over a thousand views, and to think that this time last year I didn't have a blog at all, it just baffles me. So even though most of the time I just write rubbish, thank you for wanting to read it!

And with that, let's look forward to next year!

I don't have any specific goals for 2015 in mind really.

I just want to be happy.

Whilst it would be nice to finish my masters with a distinction, get my own flat, move down south, get a new car and have the best job, all I want is to know that I did my best and that I carried on believing in myself. Though a gym membership probably wouldn't go amiss haha.

So lets just say:

1. I want to finish my masters knowing I put everything into it and tried my hardest.

2. I want to spend more time on my blog and my photography.

3. I want to visit at least 3 places i've never been before.

And that's it! :)

Thank you for reading my little (long) post about my year, and thank you for reading my blog this year!

Have you written a round-up of your year? Leave it in the comments i'd love to read it! :)

Love, Amylou x

I hope that gives you a few ideas! There are so many things that are perfect for Secret Santa gifts, but it can be so hard to find them sometimes!

Are you doing a secret santa this year? Where did you find you gifts?

Blogmas Day Nine: Christmas Gift Guides - Bloggers

Hey guys,

So today I thought i'd share a little gift guide, one especially for bloggers. I know all bloggers aren't the same, and i'm not saying they are, these are just things that I think are really nice! Really it just gives me another excuse to find things that i'd really like!

Stationery Stocking Stuffers:

All of these are from Kate Spade and I found them at Selfridges, how cute are they?! I actually want them all. As bloggers we spend a lot of time in our offices/at our desks, and how pretty would these look next to your laptops/computers? They are very girly, so those who aren't into gold and sparkly things might not appreciate them, but personally, i'd be in love.

If you can't see the picture clearly they are:
- Little Gold Notebook
- Glasses Print Pencil Pouch (I just showed the stationery that comes inside it)
- Hello Darling Stationery Set
- Set of 24 Bow Push Pins
- Gold Dots Spiral Notebook
- Set of 24 Gold Dot Coasters
- Set of 12 Bow Paper Clips
- Idiom Pencil Set

That wasn't even the whole range, there are so many more amazing things that Kate Spade makes for for office/study spaces. But i'm getting too carried away, and if you don't love new stationery, then I imagine you're not all that interested! (I, on the other hand, love getting new stationery)

Technological Gifts:

(I do realise most of these are very expensive, I went a little overboard with dreaming of what I could get if money was no object here...)

But if you do like the look of any of these, here are the links:

If you want to buy your friend or family member something different, a lot of bloggers use their blog to review things, so they can recommend different things to their readers, how about getting them a subscription to something?

For beauty bloggers, how about a subscription to a beauty box service? A few examples could be:

I've used latest in beauty a few times now, and I don't think you subscribe but you can pick the boxes that you want, and you know what is inside them which is great, I especially love the ones they've made with Glamour magazine! But if you like the element of surprise i'd pick the others as it will be a surprise what you get each month!

For food bloggers, how about a tasting club subscription? A few examples could be:

Hotel Chocolat - Chocolate. Every month. What else could you want?
Try the World - Try food from all over the world every other month.
Flavrbox - Full of all sorts of goodies like popcorn and teas and jams, every month!
Graze - A box of healthy snacks delivered every week!

I've currently got the Graze box subscription, and though I don't particularly enjoy healthy foods, some of them are good (hello guilt free brownies and popcorn), and my sister loves all of them pretty much!

So there's a few ideas! I'd love any of these (obviously, I made the list), what do you think, would you like to get any of these?

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Blogmas Day Eight: Christmas Party Dresses

Hey guys!

Christmas is a time of celebration, and December is full of Christmas parties, and you need dresses for those parties right?! I decided to make a post with a few dresses that i've seen and loved, just incase you needed some inspiration, or just wanted to look at some pretty dresses!

This first one is the Sarah Maxi Dress from Coast and I love it, I actually have this dress in my wardrobe waiting for my work's Christmas party. Black maxi dresses never go out of style, and they are so flattering. The bow detail on the back just gives it something special, and draws attention. Simple and elegant, a really beautiful gown.

I love red for christmas, and this Finale Crepe Dress from Coast is gorgeous. I actually have it in black and it looks so much prettier in person, and it looks amazing to begin with. The most flattering shape and the softest material. There's something about wearing a red dress that brings a certain confidence, that you don't get from other colours. Perfect for Christmas time.

Another colour perfect for Christmas is gold. I love this Glitter Neoprene Dress from Warehouse. The photos don't do it justice, just click on the link and watch the video of it on the catwalk, the way it catches the light is gorgeous. So sparkly, and so pretty. For those who daren't wear sequins or glittery fabrics throughout the year, christmas is the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone, and this dress would be a great place to start! *update - I fell in love with this dress and actually went out and bought it, it's so sparkly!*

This Leather and Scuba Skater Dress is also from Warehouse and is so pretty. You could wear this any time of year, but for Christmas i'd say make it a little more showy with a statement necklace, gold heels and a sparkly bag. Nude is a colour that pretty much everyone can pull off, and this is such a flattering shape, I practically live in skater dresses like this. Gorgeous. (and if you want something just a bit darker, it also comes in black!)

I love love love this dress. It's the FLAWRA Strapless Ruffle Dress from Ted Baker and it's so beautiful. I've always been a little skeptical of dresses like this, worried people would mistake it for a wedding dress or something like that, though I think this one is short enough for it to be ok. It's also trying to find a moment to wear it, as it's quite a fancy dress, but you can't really wear cream/white to a wedding so really that leaves dinners, white parties and winter parties! A really beautiful dress, I would love to have something like this for Christmas!

Those are my favourite five dresses that i've come across whilst looking for christmas party dresses this year! What do you think? Have you got any special dresses lined up for your parties this year?

Blogmas Day Seven: Christmas Table Decor

Hey guys!

Today I thought i'd share with you a few ideas for some christmas table decorations! Each year I get to help set up and buy things for our christmas table, and I just love it so much. Setting out cute little place cards for your family with little table presents and crackers and then you can put out mini christmas trees, and arrange the centrepieces all cute with fairy lights and mini baubles!

One of my absolute favourite things we have for this year are these adorable little napkin rings from John Lewis:
You can find them here and at only £8 for four, they are an absolute bargain! So cute! There are so many good choices out there, these are a few others that I come across that I liked too:

1- John Lewis | 2 - House of Fraser | 3 - Marks and Spencer | 4 - Debenhams | 5 - John Lewis
6 - Tesco | 7 - Amazon | 8 - Amara | 9 - Matalan

Centrepieces can be so simple and yet so effective. I love this one:

Candles, wreaths and pine cones can be so easy to get hold of, and they make such a lovely centrepiece. It just looks inviting and really makes the whole table seem christmassy. Perfect for those that don't like their tables to be too busy!

This one has a similar feel with the candles and pinecones but also has holly and parts of the pine tree too. The tall glasses with candles in can block the view across the table, so would look best on a long table, as no one would be able to see each other on a small one! I like how simple and elegant this looks.

I also love the little table present boxes! We used to make our own crackers with personalised presents in for a few years, but we do table presents now instead (though our boxes are usually smaller than these!) I think it's just such a nice touch. You can still use crackers so that you can have the excellent paper hats to wear as you eat, but it can be so nice to find a little something to just give each person before they eat, we usually find keyrings or novelty USBs or something similar that represents that person's' hobby, they don't add much to the cost of table decor and they always bring a smile!

credit

This one has a simple red and white theme and it is so pretty! Not too fussy, just a few table decorations, your standard dinner and side plate/dinner and starter plate and a little table present. Perfect.

You could also add a little stocking to hold your cutlery like this one:

credit

So cute! This would be a great addition to a kids table too!

So many different ways you can add little touches to really bring a table together, but I won't list anymore as this is getting pretty long, and i'm sure you don't want to see my endless list of christmas table decorations i've looked up! haha. Hope you like some of these ideas!

How do you decorate your Christmas table?

Blogmas Day Six: Christmas Food!

Hey guys!

It's almost a week into December now, so we are well and truly in the Christmas spirit and that means food, so much food!

I don't know why, but we all (at least that I know) eat so much more at Christmas! I love it! Until I have to run it all off, but we'll leave that until January for now! haha :)

My favourite thing about Christmas food, is the turkey

source
I mean how amazing does that look?! But you can't eat turkey everyday (well you could if you really wanted to) so I thought i'd share some ideas for a few other christmas snacks and desserts to make in December!

If you're having an Italian night, why not make Christmas Tree tear-and-share bread?

credit and recipe

How about some adorable strawberry and brownie trees?

credit and recipe

Or just some simple and yummy chocolate cupcakes?

credit

Or some yummy grinch-inspired fruit snacks?

credit
I'd probably even go as far as to get an edible ink pen and draw faces on the grapes, but then I am a child at heart!

There are so many different things you can make and give a christmas theme. I always associate this time of year with chocolate and roast dinners (not together!) and profiteroles. I know profiteroles aren't a christmas food, but we always have them around christmas so I always think of christmas when we have them! I mean who doesn't want a christmas croquembouche like this:

credit

Just add a chocolate fondue and a selection of toppings and you have the perfect end to any meal! I love making profiteroles with my sister, think we need to make one of these this year!

But how about Christmas food for the big day feast?

All links here

This all looks so good. Prosciutto wrapped asparagus, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, and garlic roasted carrots with parsnips and potatoes. My mouth is watering just thinking about eating these. As a family we have a roast dinner almost every Sunday, but there's just something special about a Christmas Dinner. I think it's because you just have so much more variety in it, and you have all your family round (and you pre-order all the food from Marks and Spencers so you know it's gonna be good).

At work we just bombard each other with chocolates and each office usually has a box of chocolates of some sort, celebrations or heroes in my office if we're lucky! It's such a festive time of year, and we all come together to celebrate with food. My eyes are definitely bigger than my stomach at this time of year, and I love every second of it.

What do you love to eat most at Christmas?

Blogmas Day Five: Christmas Films!

Hey guys!

Today I thought i'd share with you some of my all time favourite christmas films! I love to light the fire, cosy up on the sofa with a hot chocolate in my christmas PJs watching christmas films.

Elf (2003)

Elf is my all time favourite christmas film. If you haven't seen it you need to. It's amazing. Will Ferrell just emcompasses everything that is christmas in his Buddy the Elf character. It's about a baby in an orphanage who crawls into Santa's sack on Christmas Eve and ends up at the North Pole and gets raised by elves, 30 years later he sets off to New York to find his family. If I could have his breakfast of spaghetti with syrup, sugar and chocolate, I would. I'd probably have no teeth left, but i'd be the happiest girl in the world.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

This film is an extremely close second. So so good, there is no one that could have played this character better than Jim Carrey. Such a heartwarming film and Taylor Momsen is so cute as Cindy Lou. It's about a town inside a snowflake called Whoville, and all the Who's love Christmas except for the Grinch who hates it and wants to steal it from everyone else. The grinch is a mean one, but he understands the feeling of not having anything to wear on a night out:

The Holiday (2006)

Such an amazing film. I don't know if it's a christmas film, or just a film set over christmas but either way, it's the best. The musical score of this film is my favourite ever too. Maestro by Hans Zimmer is so beautiful, and one of my favourite songs ever. A story of two women who need a break from their lives so they trade houses, cars, friends, everything for 2 weeks, and they find exactly what they need from each other. I love it.

Home Alone (1990)

Home Alone is such a classic christmas film. It was released 2 years before I was born and I remember watching it growing up and thinking how fun it looked to play all those pranks! But it was also a bit scary that he could be left alone like that! It's about a family who are going away for Christmas, but forget about Kevin the youngest who is left home alone and he has to deal with burglars who are trying to get in his house thinking it's empty.

Love, Actually (2003)

I always forget that Love, Actually is a Christmas film! I love it so much, it's one of those films with lots of stories of different characters and they all cross over into each other. It's just so sweet. Something i've always remembered from this film is it's opening, it starts with a scene in the arrivals gate of Heathrow Airport talking about love. It's something i've always loved, seeing people picking up loved ones, or waiting for family that they haven't seen in months. All you can see in their faces is happiness and love, and it's beautiful.

Such a heartwarming film, and one you have to watch, it isn't weepy, it's funny and just puts a big smile on your face.

The Santa Clause (1994)

credit

This is another amazing Christmas film, Tim Allen hears santa on the roof of his house and goes outside and scares him, making him fall off the roof, he then disappears leaving only the suit and instructions to put it on in case of an emergency. He then ends up going around the city and elves tell him he is santa and he thinks it's all a dream, but it isn't. I was 2 when this came out and it's another film I grew up watching, and absolutely loving.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

credit

Another amazing film, Susan the little girl doesn't believe in Santa Claus as her mother told her the 'secret' that he isn't actually real, but she helps out Mr Claus anyway, and it's such a magical film. Such a feel good film, and another one that I grew up watching. I don't know how many new christmas films come out each year, but I think most people end up watching the films they grew up with, for me anyway, they hold such good memories!

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

credit

The songs in this film are so catchy, you watch it once and you'll be singing them for a week, but they are so good. I didn't realise how old this film was until I just looked it up! I think I was in high school the first time I saw it, and I've watched it every year since. Jack Skeleton is the pumpkin king of Halloween Town and he is bored of doing the same thing all the time and one day he stumbles across Christmas town and tries to take the idea of Christmas home, but they don't quite get it. A great film.

The Life of Brian (Monty Python) (1979)

credit

I don't know if this is technically a christmas film, but apparently it is, so i'm putting it on my list! This is such a great film, it has a very British sense of humour, so I don't think it is to everyone's tastes, but it's a classic. Brian is born on Christmas day in a stable next door to Jesus, and spends his whole life being mistaken for the messiah, but according to his mother 'he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy!'

Have you ever watched any of these films? Did I leave any of your favourites off of my list?

Blogmas Day Four: The Christmas Tag!

Hey Guys!

So a while ago I saw the Christmas Tag over on the MakeupSavvy blog and thought i'd give it a go! As I was doing blogmas I thought it would fit in perfectly too! You can head over to MakeupSavvy.co.uk and read Fee's answers here :)

1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?

I would have to say that my all time favourite christmas movie has to be Elf. Will Ferrell just embodies the spirit of christmas so perfectly, and it's just such a happy film! My excitement for christmas borders on that level, and if I could have the spaghetti with chocolate sauce and smarties and chocolate for breakfast, I would.

2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Christmas morning! Santa hasn't been on christmas eve so how could you possibly open your presents then?! ;) We do get one present on christmas eve though, this year it's our christmas onesies so we can watch christmas films before heading out to celebrate with neighbours! (In christmas jumpers, not the onesies, though that would be fun!)

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

I don't have a favourite christmas memory from just one year I don't think anyway! My favourite memories from christmas are always just that I get to see my family and we all just have a good time together. Christmas for me is about sharing time with the people you love and being thankful that you have such wonderful people in your life.

4. Favourite festive food?

The Christmas Turkey! We must only have turkey around three times a year? And the christmas one is always the best! It just tastes so good! And the roast potatoes, and the mashed potatoes (I love potatoes can you tell?) and yorkshire puddings! mmmmm

5. Favourite Christmas gift?

This is a tricky one! I don't know! I've loved everything i've ever gotten for christmas, and I don't think I have a favourite. Though as a little girl i'm sure it was getting my first bike, and then my wendy house for the garden. This year is my favourite I think, if I had to pick, as I love photography and even though i've gotten to play with cameras i've only had compact digital cameras before (which I love) but this year i'm getting the Canon 700D as my first DSLR and I can't wait. :D

6. Favourite Christmas scent?

Hmm. We don't burn scented candles in my house so I don't have a scent like that to remember christmas by, but we spend a lot more time in the house so we bake a lot more, which always smells incredible, and of course the smell of christmas dinner!

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

I don't actually! For the past few years i've been visiting various people on christmas eves, but this year i'm staying at home and I think that should be my new tradition. I'm looking forward to spending the whole christmas time with my sister and my parents and the rest of my family, and we might start our own tradition this year. It's important to spend it with those you love, and those who love you.

8. What tops your tree?

It used to be a little blonde white fairy that we've had since I was a baby, but much to my heartbreak (yes family, heartbreak), my family decided it needed to be replaced and so last year we got a gold star for the top. But if it was up to me, the old disheveled fairy would definitely be up there!

9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?

I don't think there ever was anything! I wasn't a spoilt brat or anything I just don't think i've ever asked for anything that wasn't reasonable! I don't really like horses so I wouldn't have asked for one of those, until this year I was scared of most dogs, so never wanted a puppy. I don't know! If I find one i'll edit into this post afterwards haha!

10. What's the best part about Christmas for you?
1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?
Ah, there's SO many, I love National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Elf, The Santa Clause etc. but one that I watch every year, without fail is The Snowman on Christmas eve. I absolutely adored the Snowman and The Snow dog. My dad bought me the little plushie last year, so cute.

2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
Always on Christmas morning (usually whilst scoffing Christmas chocolate) We usually get new Christmas Pyjamas on Christmas Eve, but we save the present opening for Christmas day morning.
3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?
My parents always used to go all out at Christmas. We'd come downstairs to presents, balloons, reindeer prints made out of glitter, red and white tape for the north pole, it was so magical as kids!
4. favourite festive food?
Aside from chocolate...Roast potatoes during Christmas dinner, so many roast potatoes.

5. Favourite Christmas gift ?
I can't remember how old I was, but it was the year of the Furby. I'm sure there were small riots amongst the shelves in Toys R us. My parents pretended they couldn't get me one but then it was hidden behind the sofa! (anyone else hide theirs in the wardrobe at night, they were so creepy!)

6. Favourite Christmas scent?
Christmas dinner cooking, mmm or the smell of the Christmas tree!
7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?
Just that it's family time, we'll usually all have wine, the fire on, lots of yummy food and sit down in our new pyjamas to watch Christmas films.

8. What tops your tree?
For years and years it was a little gold vintage angel, my dad always lifted me up to put it on the tree, when I was a kid... at the very end of decorating everything. She was always kind of wonky and worn looking, but it was tradition. These days it's a big gold glittery star.

9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?
Not in an ungrateful way. I mean, I used to circle half of the Argos catalogue! But every year I would ask for a dog, without fail. One year my parents brought it a huge box, with holes in and something was moving. I was certain it was a puppy...it was a rabbit ha ha Still one of the best pets I've ever had though. Then last year, I finally bought myself my own Christmas puppy :) Oscar on the 21sr of December. He was certainly worth the wait.

10. What's the best part about Christmas for you?
Spending time with my loves ones, friends and family, after eating Christmas dinner, watching Only fools and Horses episodes that we've seen ten times already. Watching the snow fall and generally having a lovely time.

10. What's the best part about Christmas for you?
Spending time with my loves ones, friends and family, after eating Christmas dinner, watching Only fools and Horses episodes that we've seen ten times already. Watching the snow fall and generally having a lovely time.

I've probably repeated this about a hundred times now (sorry) but my family! I'm blessed in that I have a family that is close and really loves each other. I lived at uni for the past 4 years so it was so nice to be able to come home and spend that time with my family. Now i'm home again, I love it even more! Christmas is a time to be appreciative for what and who you have in your life. The people that support you and want you to be happy, and will always stand by you because you're a good person and they love you.

Everyone just seems generally happier around this time too. I love seeing how excited the children in my family are at christmas, that spirit of still believing and seeing santa and laying out treats for the reindeer, everything is just so magical to them. I wish more people held onto that christmas spirit.

And that's it! :) If you want to do the tag then simply copy the questions below and answer them on your blog too! Let me know in the comments if you do as i'd love to read them!
